Review of the UNIWA V202T Flip Phone.
I
need to use a button phone and prefer flip phones. As my 3G
network is being phased out, I went looking for a 4G phone and ended
up with a UNIWA V202T. The phone has many features that are listed in
the review at the bottom of this page. I am old school and used
to learning from an instruction manual, not the modern method of
learning by trial and error. As the included
instruction manual covered only the basics, I decided to go through the
menu and document it.
It turned out that there is a lot more to a phone
than I imagined. After playing around with this phone I realized that
with so many options, learning by trial and error is perhaps the only
possible way to go. When buying over the internet there is no detailed
information available. I hope this page helps to fill the information
gap.
Do
not rely on the correctness of anything written here. Devices can
change specifications at any time and I can get things wrong.
Please contact me with any comments or requests. Peter@poppasplace.au

If the calling network allows the calling number is displayed on the
external screen and if the number is in the contacts list the name is
displayed. You can set flip to answer in settings otherwise open the
phone and select answer or reject.

This is my home screen. I set the RHS top key to be the Dual-SIM function in SETTINGS.
The home screen shows each SIM, strength bars and if 2G, 3G or 4G.
Received calls can be from either SIM network which is shown on the screen.
When talking on one SIM if a call comes in on the other SIM it receives a busy signal by my test.

The text entry methods.
The
current text entry method is shown at the top of the screen. On
pressing the # button a list is shown. By further pressing the # button
the choices are En, en, EN, Abc, abc, ABC, 123, Writing language ( OK
shows a choice of 24). Select a method and OK it. With ABC, Abc, abc,
holding down the key or pressing the key after the last letter types the number. Using EN, En, en, invokes a predictive text entry
system known as T9 (see Wickipedia). You enter letters by one press of
a button with the desired letter on it. For example enter "cat" by
pressing "228", a list of word guesses is shown, move to "cat"
using the side OK buttons and press "0" to confirm the word and add a space or OK for no space. If the list of possible entries shows the choices
numbered, press a number to select the entry. This version can
PERMANENTLY add new words to it's dictionary. DO NOT make a mistake doing this. After entering the word,
step through all the incorrect choices until you see a number, check
your spelling and your entry by checking the numbers, continue right
stepping until "New word" appears, OK and "Add new word" appears, clear
the incorrect word and put the correct word, OK. This phone also has
smart punctuation, try entering 2261803610 "can't do. " appears. The
"1" has entered the correct punctuation. The 4 buttons surrounding the OK will take you to any of the text on the page to make corrections.

GENERAL POINTS
A WORK AROUND FOR THE LACK OF MISSED CALL AND MESSAGE LIGHTS.
If you leave the phone in the cradle it is convenient to get some
indication without opening the phone that there has been a call or
message.
Go to settings and set the back-light "Always on". Set the charger on
and place the phone in the cradle. If the front screen does not stay on
re-seat the phone.
When a message arrives a small envelope appears and when call
arrives and times out, the front screen is turned off after a few
seconds. If you see a dark screen you have a missed call.
Back-light always on uses about 5% of the battery per hour so it is
best used while on charge. Note with the screens off on standby the
phone uses about 0.5% of the battery per hour.
This blanking of the screen is perhaps a quirk that may not work
sometimes. To be certain provided the phone is looked at from a good
angle the envelope and a green phone image that indicates a call, can be seen from about 3
meters.
SHORTCUTS TO FUNCTION
Call History, Multimedia, SOS, Settings, and Application have a shortcut method of entry to the first level of function.
For example after selecting settings and whenever
"Settings" is at the top of the screen, pressing a number will take you
to a line number that was determined when the page is first shown. For
example regardless of the positions of the "Settings" lines after
scrolling them, entering a 2 will always take you to PROFILES.
SETTINGS => OK => 6 gives the same result as SETTINGS => OK => Down, Down, Down, Down, Down. => OK. It takes you to SPEED DIAL.
This method of selecting an entry line works in at least some other places.
BANDS SUPPORTED

3G: WCDMA B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B8

SETING UP MMS
Confirm that you have DATA available from your SIM supplier.
Check
that MMS can be stored by MENU => MESSAGE => OK =>
OPTIONS => MESSAGE CAPACITY => MMS memory:. (??M/1.8M.)
Turn on DATA SERVICE by MENU => SETTINGS => OK =>
CONNECTIONS => OK => DATA SERVICE => OK and
PREFERRED DATA SIM is set to SIM with data.
Send a MMS to yourself and watch for a flash screen saying the message was sent.
It seems that some people turn data off routinely. Some phone companies
send the receiver, with data off, a detailed failure message and if data
is turned on will send the message if within the valid time, others do
nothing if data is off.
CONNECTING TO A COMPUTER.
On
connecting to a Windows 10, 11 or Vista computer and opening the
phone (requires USB type C DATA
cable as opposed to a charging only cable.) the phone requested I
select a USB application (Charging or udisk). On selecting udisk a
driver was loaded and
two removable disks appeared. Using
Windows "Properties" I found that one drive had 36MB free which was the
phone memory and the other was my SD card.
22 folders containing 273 .mp3 files were loaded to the G: folder
"Audio". Windows
reported 195 items loaded. After using the computer Safely remove
hardware option, the phone MY FILES menu was checked and
showed 278 links which was correct as I had 5 links already in the
phone. The phone must be on when
connecting or USB driver fails to load. After setting windows to show
hidden files, opening the hidden folder @cstardata sending the file
"compile time"
to Windows note book revealed "Build time 08.25.2023".
BACKING UP YOUR CONTACTS TO A COMPUTER.
MENU => CONTACTS => OK => OPTIONS => IMPORT/EXPORT => OK

Check that you have created a vCard file by MENU => MY FAVORITE
=> OK => You should see a xxxxxxxxxxx..vcf file at the bottom of
the folder list.
Now connect to a computer and store the file. It can be inspected with
any text editor like notebook and you will see your contacts and their
information.
To stop confusion when you back up again you can delete the file from
the phone. Run 'Eject' to do a clean disconnect from the computer.
RESTORING CONTACTS FROM A COMPUTER.
Connect to the computer. Copy the xxxxxxxxxxxx.vcf file you wish to
restore to the vCard phone (not card) folder, then run 'Eject' on the computer to do a clean
disconnect.
MENU => CONTACTS => OK => OPTIONS => IMPORT/EXPORT
=> OK => IMPORT CONTACTS => OK => SELECT vCard folder =>
OK < This OK must be the top LH button OK. success flashes. Check your contacts. You will notice that if you
selected for export contacts that were on your SIM they will now be on
your phone.
The 'trick' is that xxxxxxxxx.vcf files are exported to the root
directory of the SD card if fitted, but restored from the vCard phone
folder.
SEARCHING CONTACTS
Show the next screen full up or down by pressing * or #.
PHONE SHUT AND ON.
Press a volume button or the alarm button if alarm not set, to show display for 10 seconds.
AUDIO
Look for EXIT (last item on menu) to get out of the audio player or a short press of the red phone key.
SPEAKER PHONE, Hands Free
If you can not easily hold the phone this phone excels in the hands
free mode. Place it on a hard surface if you need maximum volume.
During
a call press the central OK button to toggle speaker phone on/off. A very tiny icon of a speaker appears in the bottom
center of the screen that indicates the use of the OK key. The sound from the speaker was
surprisingly good and the phone will find use on my pillow playing mp3's.
THE PHONE WORKS WHEN OFF
The
3 alarms and the schedules in the calendar sound even when the phone is
turned off. Good on it!
THE OK BUTTON
When making an SMS the OK
key shortens the menu path but will send without confirmation. A very
small icon under some conditions shows in the bottom center and gives
some clue to the function of the OK key. A green up arrow indicates
send.
RECORDING A CALL
When on a call press MENU and select RECORDING IS STARTED. The
recording will stop at the end of the call or when MENU > RECORDING
IS STOPPED is selected. The recording is found in MENU > MY FAVORITE
> AUDIO under the name :- "Phone Number or contact name", "_", "year",
"mm","dd","hh","mm","ss".wav
IN THE HOME SCREEN
A long hold of the # button selects silent, vibrate, normal and shows the result.
A short press of the red phone button stops audio play as well as other things.
Notes
(*inv)
Option not displayed without key action and otherwise there is no
visual indication that it exists. Some screens that have not been
marked with (*inv) show a faint slider on the RHS that indicates that
there are unseen options. Searching for a function that is hidden
requires extra effort.

A REVIEW OF THE UNIWA V202T FLIP PHONE
UNIWA V202T Many features.
When reviewing the phone was only run with 1 SIM card. By my observation signal strength and sound quality was up to scratch.
PROS.
Big keys. Big letters on number keys. Special keys make common
functions quick and easy. Dual SIM. Dual display. Vast number of
2G,3G,4G frequency bands supported. Loud and clear speaker phone. The
keys surrounding the OK key and top RHS button can be programmed as
short cuts to Video player, FM Radio (excellent reception with no additional aerial), Camera, Profiles, Alarm, My
Files, Image, Bluetooth, Calendar, Calculator, Inbox, and Recorder. A
PIN can be set on 10 important menus giving privacy.
There is a call time limit reminder. You can set the daily time for
auto power on/off. Speed Dial can be set on
buttons 2 through 9. The emergency call button can be set to
silent which makes it useful in call the manager situations. The
calendar
with schedules and three time alarms are active with phone turned off.
CONS.
Just a few minor ones. You are not given enough time to cancel a
mistaken press of the emergency button. There is about a 75 character
limit when creating the emergency SMS. During an emergency call the
phone is not in speaker mode. The icon that in some cases shows to give
a clue to the function of the OK key is very small. I failed to spot
that the OK button toggles the speaker phone during a call. On some
menus there is no indication that there are more options below the
page.
Update 12/07/2025 I have been using this phone for about 18
months with 2 SIM cards and it has had no problems. It has a mighty
clear speaker phone and I have given up using the home phones hands
free and much prefer my Uniwa.
